Connecting visitors and communities together

With a Kiwi Welcome membership, we connect you with businesses that care deeply about preserving Aotearoa.

We also connect you with a range of exclusive discounts and rewards, ensuring you save money and make a difference with your holiday.

The Kiwi Welcome collective

Kiwi Welcome is made possible thanks to the generosity and passion of our merchant partners. Independently, they provide unique products and services for people to enjoy but together they share a common vision for a more sustainable future for tourism in Aotearoa.

Our merchants decide what social or environmental causes will be funded thanks to the profits of Kiwi Welcome membership sales. The more members we get, the greater positive impact Kiwi Welcome will have and the closer we’ll be to transforming tourism into a force for good.

Kate Mitchell

Digital and Sustainability Coordinator at Edgewater Resort, Wanaka

"Edgewater’s enthusiasm to support Kiwi Welcome stems from the ability it provides to bring travellers together for a common cause. It represents people who want to experience what this incredible country has to offer but make sure they are thoughtful in their travels. Kiwi Welcome does the hard work for the traveller by vetting out their partners to make sure each incentive is coming from an establishment that is proud to support sustainable tourism and make it an essential part of our industry now and long term.

Any opportunity to lend further support to the Te Kakano Trust through Kiwi Welcome would be meaningful. Their mission is at the heartbeat of the experience Edgewater uniquely has to offer – being located directly on the lake, we want to preserve the view and natural environment for generations to come."

Jo Bullus

Duty Manager at Wanaka TOP 10 Holiday Park

"Initiatives such as Kiwi welcome come about out of necessity & love and it couldn’t have been conceived at a better time.

After 5 years of being in the holiday park industry, we have seen an increase in our guests showing more interest in the community initiatives & projects that we support. Our large wall decal in our communal lounge was the start of our journey in relaying the importance of everyone ‘doing their bit’ to protect NZ and highlights locally the projects we support: water quality, pest trapping, composting & recycling.

Kiwi Welcome offers a platform to strengthen the connection between tourism businesses, visitors and the community, at a time when sustainability has never been so important."

Mark Ebbins

Chef at Hāwea Hotel

"A lodge, pub or hotel has been part of the Lake Hāwea landscape, in our exact location, since 1925. We sit at the entrance to the Hāwea Village; we are your first hello and last goodbye. Our place has always embodied this incredibly special location and the deep community spirit of the area.

It’s our mission to make this gateway to Hāwea welcoming and accessible to all. Which is why Kiwi Welcome is such an important community for us to be a part of. We already do what we can to support the local environment and people, but if we could help visitors do the same – well, we’d see that as us doing right by the locals and right in our role as gatekeepers."

Esme Robertson

Customer Service Representative at Thrifty Car Rental Queenstown

"Thrifty are very excited to be a part of Kiwi Welcome, an amazing initiative which will help in making tourism sustainable by providing great discounts but also giving back to our community. At Thrifty we are about providing a vehicle to give the freedom to explore what this beautiful region and further afield has to offer and as a Qualmark Gold Sustainable Tourism Business, rest assured that you're in safe hands with our efficient and friendly staff, ensuring you receive the best service every time.

We would love to see funding go towards community-led initiatives that help to sustain our environment with native planting like the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust. To all the Kiwis wanting to explore your backyard, we look forward to welcoming you to our region."

Micka McDonald

Front Office Manager at The Rees Hotel & Apartments

"The Rees Hotel is committed to our practices that support the goals of environmental and social protection and sustainability. We hold the highest level of recognition within the tourism sector when we were awarded our Qualmark Gold classification, which we have held for 3 years running which is no mean feat. A Gold Sustainable Tourism Award identifies those businesses leading the way in making the New Zealand tourism industry a world class sustainable visitor destination.

Kiwi Welcome is a great fit for us. Their concept works very well with our own hotel values. The idea of contributing back to the district is particularly appealing, especially in this current climate, where companies are merely scraping by. The Rees Hotel is a well known local supporter of school groups and local charities. We also feel very strongly about our work with the Kea conservation and would donate our funds to the preservation of the world’s only alpine parrot that is in dangerous decline."

Jane Shaw

Provisions of Arrowtown

“I am very excited at the prospect of working with Kiwi Welcome. It encapsulates many of my ideals of how we need to connect our tourism and hospitality businesses with supporting and creating benefits for our local community.

During the challenging recent covid19 situation, many of us have found ourselves paring back our vision and having the time to fully appreciate the communities in which we live. Organisations like Kiwi Harvest, a food rescue charity, as well as Sustainable Queenstown and local entrepreneur Michael Sly’s Waste to Wilderness scheme benefit all of us in the community and make the Wakatipu an even better place to live and do business.”

The Orchard Cottage

"Kiwi Welcome is such a brilliant but simple way to connect visitors with tourism operators who are true ambassadors of our country and knowing they are not only supporting local businesses giving great experiences but leave a lasting gift towards a more sustainable future of the district for all to enjoy.

After 8 years in the accommodation sector giving people a genuine “kiwi welcome” our experience has shown us people love people who are passionate about their environment and offer good value with a more personal touch helping create lasting happy memories which is really what life is all about. We support the Lake Hayes Water Quality project to ensure the preservation of this particularly beautiful little lake and surrounds."

James Stokes

Managing Director at Glenorchy Air

“Kiwi Welcome is a fantastic initiative which will assist in making tourism sustainable into the future. We love the way Kiwi Welcome uses such a simple model to allow tourists and businesses to play an active role in the positive impact of our industry, both economically and environmentally, on New Zealand.

Glenorchy Air is committed to showing our customers the beauty of the Southern Alps in a way that limits the impact on our pristine mountains, landscape, and our native wildlife. Our partnership with Kiwi Welcome allows us to honour this commitment to an even greater extent. We would like to see support from this project go to a range of different conservation efforts, particularly to the increased protection of our native birds, like the Kea Conservation Trust.”

Leslie Johnston

Rippon Vineyard & Winery

"Kiwi Welcome brings together so many ideals which Rippon has always held close to its heart … community, sustainability, the land on which we stand and the water which sustains and entertains us all here in Wānaka. We are delighted to participate and share in this programme.

We have nominated Wai Wānaka as the Trust we will support through this initiative. Health is, now more than ever, a top priority for us all across the globe. Locally, we can help ourselves achieve this by ensuring our waterways remain clean, healthy and sustainably managed."

Alexandra Ilse

Marketing Manager at Kiwi Birdlife Park

"Here at the Kiwi Birdlife Park we believe in kaitiakitanga, meaning the stewardship or guardianship of the land and its waters. People are part of the environment, not superior to it, and we are seeing a collective shift towards a more sustainable future and sustainable way of travel. Kiwi Welcome encapsulates this and we are proud to be part of its incredible initiative.

We’ve seen unbelievable local support during the Covid situation and in turn have been able to continue our vital conservation work in the Wakatipu. With Kiwi Welcome, we see the opportunity of supporting the surrounding predator-free efforts in the area by the Whakatipu Wildlife Trust, Predator Free Arrowtown, and the Routeburn Dart Wilderness Trust."

Jake Berry

Southern Rivers Fly Fishing

"Growing up in the Wanaka area I have always called this place my home, and I have always had a strong affinity with the incredible nature that makes this area special. I am passionate about its preservation and maintaining a strong connection between people, community and nature. So when I was approached by Sam and Kiwi Welcome it seemed an absolute no brainer really. Here is a concept that helps Kiwi travellers connect with local businesses and their owners, then in turn it gives back to the very causes and values that I hold strong for myself and my operations as a business owner and guide.

I am very much into preserving our wonderful nature and see that putting back into strong community initiatives and programs will go along way to achieving this. People are part of nature and without it we do not survive or thrive. I will be backing environmental programs that protect our wildlife, waterways and natural ecosystems that have formed through thousands of years of evolution. I will support initiatives that connect people and communities to nature and that grow our appreciation for what we have, and not mention how lucky we are as Kiwis."

Rachel Lavalette

Global Marketing Manager at Cardrona Distillery

"We love the idea of Kiwi Welcome. It's a great initiative as it also harnesses much of what we stand for, embracing Kiwi welcomes, supporting local, promoting domestic tourism and celebrating what's unique about New Zealand, its ingenuity, innovation and unique place in the hearts and minds of the world.

We have endeavoured to support the local community by the provision of free sanitiser in the toughest times of lockdown and then welcome locals with free tours as we re-emerged into Level 1. People and community is what matters to us, we've always felt very supported by our community and we have always tried to be supportive in turn, to have a platform dedicated to this is truly wonderful."

Craig Throne

Managing Director Mons Royale

“Most of us working here at Mons Royale HQ in Wanaka and our store in Queenstown were not born here, we came to live here because the energy, the beauty and the power the Southern mountains provide. At Mons Royale we are all about enabling an experience in the Mountains and we find that people are a lot more likely to protect these environments when they have experienced them first hand.

The community giveback was key to us lending our support, these mountain towns have a unique feeling, people look out for and learn from each other. The community project we would support is Protect Our Winters which draws attention and action towards the impact of climate change on our environment. Come visit and when you like it stay for longer.”

Justin Worth

Managing Director & Founder of Snopro

"The ultimate 'Win, Win!' Kiwi Welcome is a positive initiative that pays it forward. While its members benefit directly, they also help create a positive change in the community well after they have left. Snopro is excited to be involved. The health of our environment, the mountains, our snowpack is integral to our business, and for our guests' enjoyment.

For the last 10 years, I have watched our snow lines recede and count fewer days of snowfall at 'lake level'. It is fitting to support a mission that aims to offset our impact. We are stoked to support Protect Our Winters NZ."

Roam Wanaka

"Support local business, gain great discounts and positively impact our communities - genius! Kiwi Welcome is a great initiative for visitors to enjoy epic discounts and know that their membership will also be supporting the community.

At Roam Wanaka we operate in the beautiful Wanaka region. We would support the eradication of pests in the Matukituki valley to protect our native birdlife for future generations. Not only is our alpine area home to a number of unique and endangered birdlife but the areas in which these birds are able to flourish offer incredible opportunities for natural and sustainable tourism which is what New Zealand is known for."

David Gatward-Ferguson

Managing Director at Nomad Safaris

“The harshest of times brings out much good in the world, initiatives such as Kiwi Welcome will prolong and develop these feelings. The world can always afford to do better with our land, flora and fauna and our peoples, it needs constant reminding and a very easy channel to put its money for good. Kiwi Welcome has no fancy ideals and requirements, just a simple way of turning visitors money, money that they were going to spend anyway, into helping to protect those things that are the reason for the money in the first place.

Nomad Safaris has been a founding trustee of the Routeburn Dart Wilderness Trust, a body that is “bringing back the birdsong” to the Head of The Lake. The area’s native bird population has been devastated by imported rodents and stoats to a point that the forest has fallen silent. Only total eradication will ensure that re-introduced species will have a chance of making the ‘hills alive with music’ once more.”

Coronet Peak Tandem Paragliding & Hang Gliding

"We at Coronet Peak Tandems love the Kiwi Welcome concept and are very excited to be involved. As an adventure tourism company we have been introducing Queenstown to our guests for 20+ years with our tandem paragliding and hang gliding flights. We fly over the stunning Coronet Peak ski field, the highest of the flying sites in Queenstown. Gliders use updraft created by sun and wind to stay in the air for as long as possible. Coronet Peak Tandems supports the Sustainable Queenstown movement.

Kiwi Welcome has presented an opportunity for visitors to enjoy a fantastic Queenstown holiday filled with great things to see/do/taste, support the local people and industry and at the same time, be part of a good cause."

The Boat Shed Café and Bistro

"At The Boat Shed we are all about supporting our local community in as many ways as we can. Our ingredients are all locally sourced and we use local suppliers.

Our team have all been drawn here for the same reasons — the access to world-class nature at our fingertips and how incredibly supportive the community is. We’re thrilled to be a part of an initiative that not only promotes conscious, domestic tourism, but also gives back to the local community in the process."

Kenny Wynter

Sales Executive at Ziptrek Ecotours, Queenstown

"Besides a strong and passionate focus on ensuring our guests and employees have the best possible experiences, Ziptrek also recognize our responsibility of being solid members of the community. Over the last decade in business, we have contributed and taken part in many partnership projects, donating in excess of $250K. We believe that our long-term success is tied to the value we provide to society.

Equally as important, we hold ourselves accountable for the preservation of the environment and well-being of the land we operate on. Up on course, internet and other power requirements run on solar and the downtown office is supplied by renewable energy retailer Ecotricity. Over the past decade we have also planted over 5000 native trees, invested in pest species control and are currently Queenstown’s only carbon neutral tourism operator.

The Kiwi Welcome initiative is outstanding in assisting Queenstown’s land and people in order for us to flourish in our space and place, and we thank you for supporting this incredible initiative."
